[TV] Talks Between Conan & FOX Heating Up
Posted by Ashish on 03.17.2010

Talks between Conan O'Brien and FOX seem to be heating up. FOX is now looking to finalize a deal with Conan as soon as possible so that they can announce his new late-night show during FOX's fall lineup reveal on May 17th.

The main hold-up right now is how local FOX stations will react to a new late-night show, since reruns of The Office and The Simpsons, which take up the slot that a late-night show would be in, are currently very profitable. Many local stations are contractually obligated to air these reruns, meaning that a new late-night show may be forced to air at different times in different markets, at least initially. Different start times would make the show hard to promote. FOX realizes, however, that if they want to get into the late-night game, now is the time to do it with Conan available.

FOX is looking to produce the late-night show for less than $60 million a year. In comparison, NBC was paying roughly $90 million a year to produce Conan's The Tonight Show, which included Conan's $12 million per year salary.

It's worth noting that FOX is not Conan's only option. Several cable networks are interested in doing something with Conan, however Comedy Central is not one of them since their main late-night timeslot is already taken up by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Conan should look to do something out of the box with this next step, stay in late night, however do it live. Have pretaped skits and whatnot ready to go during the show as always but running the show live would create a much more off the cuff and impromptu show that will have people tuning in because it'll be different from the other 8 late night shows all taped at 3 in the afternoon and then edited for broadcast.

People on the radio broadcast 3-5 hours for a show live, there is no reason that a cost effective live late night show cannot be accomplished considering how many hours of live news are aired daily nationally, hell the Today show is basically a 4 hours news and interview based program on NBC and it's the same general idea as a late night talk show minus the news and hopefully Al Roker.

That is the best idea I've heard!! He really should look into doing that. If not he could do it like snl and tape just before it airs!! A live Conan show would be the shit!!
