[TV] Jay Leno is Winning The Late-Night Battle
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 03.19.2010
But he's losing viewers...
Although Jay Leno is winning the ratings battle with David Letterman, pulling in 4.4 million viewers to Letterman's 3.8 million, his ratings are not where they were.
He's down 13% in the adult demographic and 3% in overall viewers compared with last year, and his 1.2 average rating is only slightly better than the 1.1 Conan O'Brien was getting in the 18-49 demographic.
What a legacy. When Carson left, he was the king of late night. No other talk show could come close to his ratings. If he wanted to kill a show, he would just black list any guests who did the other talk show.
Leno has had NBC in turmoil twice, losing the company money each time, while losing the huge ratings lead. The Tonight Show merely leads the pack rather than dominating it.
On the other hand, Leno did better than TNA. So Jay>Hulk.

Yeah, they did three times.
With the mess after Johnny retired, they had much less advertising revenue on the Tonight Show, especially since Letterman was killing him in ratings for years. There was also the effect of having to replace Letterman - Conan had much lower ratings for years.
It was Leno the affiliates wanted out - his dead ratings compared to what was normally in the prime time slot lost them and the network money. He was killing the networks as a lead-in to local news.
They also had to buy out Letterman and O'Brien.
The losses directly attributed to Leno are hundreds of millions of dollars.
This from what used to be one of the most lucrative NBC properties.

Give it a few more weeks, and Letterman will be in the lead again. Karma means that Leno losing is inevitable.

Jay Leno has beaten David Letterman for 15 years! Easily destroying Dave in the ratings. His big ratings also made "The Late Night Show" with Conan O'brien the 1# show at 12:35pm.
NBC lost money by getting rid of Leno for Obrien, who's show began to tank waaay before the "Jay Leno Show" took over.
Now that Jay is back, he is 1# again.

Funny how everyone blames Leno...It was Not him who went to NBC and told them to put Conan at 10:30pm.
