The American Film Institute announced its selections for AFI Awards 2010, AFI's almanac that records the year's most outstanding achievements in film, television, and other forms of the moving image arts. AFI Awards is the only recognition that honors the community's creative ensembles as a whole, acknowledging the collaborative nature of the art form.
AFI MOVIES OF THE YEAR:
- Black Swan
- The Fighter
- Inception
- The Kids Are All Right
- 127 Hours
- The Social Network
- The Town
- Toy Story 3
- True Grit
- Winter's Bone
AFI SPECIAL AWARDS:
- The King's Speech
- Waiting for Superman
The King's Speech and Waiting for Superman were deemed ineligible for the Top 10 movies because they fell outside of AFI's guidelines; King's Speech was a British production, while Superman is a documentary not a narrative film.
AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale had the following to say: "As AFI Awards entered its second decade of documenting excellence across the century, it became clear from the scholars, critics and artists who come together for the American Film Institute that acknowledging outstanding work outside the traditional AFI criteria would provide greater context to our goal of recording a true history of the art form. This year and moving forward, in addition to honoring American storytelling in the narrative format, the juries may name Special Awards and it is AFI's honor to shine a proper light on these artists and their achievements."
The AFI Awards are made through a jury process where scholars, film and television artists, critics and AFI Trustees determine the most outstanding achievements of the year, and provide a detailed rationale for each selection.
Looks like a pretty acurite list.I have Inception,The Town,Toys Story 3 as my top three movies already.I still have to see most of the movies on their list sense they haven't come out yet.My only problem with their list is that The American should be on it over Winter Bone.

Ugh...The Kids Are All Right? I fail to see why everyone worships that movie, whereas movies like City Island (a movie with similar tone and themes) is forgotten.

I can agree with this list.

I do not understand why The Town keeps showing up on top 10 lists, it was okay at best, Ben Affleck was horrible in it and the ending was incredibly cheesy.

Aren't there still several films coming out this year? Kind of premature, right?

which is probably why their list includes some films not yet released and/or now just reaching limited release in places like NY and LA...genius
