Compared to The X-Files...
Deadline reports that A&E have ordered a "cast-contingent" pilot for Occult a new drama produced by Michael Bay (Transformers) and written by James Wong (The X-Files).
It's been compared to both X-Files and Fringe. It focuses on an FBI agent who returns from administrative leave after losing it when his wife disappears. He is teamed up with another agent with her own issues who specializes in the occult. They solve crimes for the new occult crimes task force. Wong will also executive produce with Bay and Platinum Dunes' Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. There is no studio attached yet.
This will be the first supernatural series for A&E. They recently greenlit a pilot for Those Who Kill in July, a US version of the Danish crime series about a forensic profiler with an understanding of serial killers as well as a ten episode order of Psycho prequel Bates Motel, with Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates. A&E previously worked with Bay and Platinum Dunes on a competition reality series in development.
Platinum Dunes decided to expand into TV last year. In May, the company earned a straight-to-series eight episode order from Starz for the Treasure Island prequel Black Sails. In July, it got a pilot order from TNT for The Last Ship, a post-apocalyptic drama.
Wong's other credits include Millennium, The Lone Gunmen, The Others, The Event and FX's American Horror Story. His feature film credits include Final Destination 3.
