Variety reports that there are still plans to turn Epic Games' Gars of War into a film franchise. The film has been in development at New Line since 2007, and Len Wiseman was once attached to direct. The film was put into turnaround so New Line could instead focus on The Hobbit trilogy. Since the game franchise has earned over one billion in sales ever since their debut in 2006 (with a fourth on the way next year), Creative Artists Agency is meting with producers to finally get the project going.
Twilight producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey were previously attached ant Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) wrote the most recent version of the script, which CAA will use in its discussions. Chris Morgan and Billy Ray have also worked on scripts. CAA reps both Epic Games and Beattie.
Gears isn't the only big game franchise set to be adapted into a film, as Microsoft is still trying to get a Halo movie off the ground. Beattle also wrote a draft of that film. Gears is exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console.
The game series focuses on human soldiers trying to protect the planet Sera from alien creatures known as the Locust Horde. Epic will work on the game to make sure it ties into the canon established by the games and books. Collectible toys have also been released.
Interest is picking up at the same time the lead designer Cliff "Cliffy B" Bleszinski announced he was leaving Epic Games after 20 years. He has worked on all aspects of design and promotion for the games. Epic is currently preparing Gears of War: Judgment for next year and sold a minority stake in their company to Chinese company Tencent this summer. The deal allows Tencent to cash in on the sales of Unreal Engine, the software used for games like Batman: Arkham City and Mass Effect 3 licensed by other publishers.
Legendary Entertainment almost bought the company in 2008.
