Someone is a big fan of Judy Garland...
Reuters reports that the classic blue and white gingham dress worn by Judy Garland in Wizard of Oz was sold for $480,000 at auction yesterday.
Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills said the price for the garment, worn by Judy Garland throughout the 1939 movie, was in line with pre-sale estimates.
A similar dress worn by Garland for the film's test shoots got a higher price of $910,000 when it was put to auction last year. Auctioneer Darren Julien said the price difference was a result of there being only a few test dresses made, while there are seven versions of the costume sold yesterday.
Just for comparison, the Hollywood clothing worn by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn sold at much higher prices last year. Monroe's outfit from the The Seven Year Itch sold for $4.6 million. Hepburn's Ascot dress from My Fair Lady sold for $3.7 million.
The buyer of the outfit, designed by MGM costume designer Adrian Greenberg, has not been identified.
