The big-time directors are seeking the job...
While all eyes are currently on Matthew Vaughn as the rumored frontrunner to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, he may have some heavy competition. Deadline's Mike Fleming, in an editorial about Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn getting in trouble for an blog post he made a couple years ago about which superheroes he'd like to sleep with, notes that Jon Favreau (Iron Man and David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) are looking to get their hands on the franchise.
Fleming notes that the credence given to rumors about Vaughn directing Star Wars come from "evasive answer and body language" from Jason Flemyng, "an actor who's known for being playful," when he was asked about about it during the Seven Psychopaths UK premiere. He goes on to note, that Favreau is very interested in the job and that Fincher, who worked for ILM as a teenager, "might be game for one of these new films." Obviously, "one of these new films" implies that Fincher may not go after Episode VII but rather one of the later films or even a potential spin-off (which has also been rumored).
Fleming finally notes that Lucasfilm continues to call all potential director names "speculation" and says that they won't comment because they would prefer to announce it on their own when they are ready. All Disney has confirmed so far is that Michael Arndt is writing the script, with the film hitting theaters in Summer 2015.
