Is the new SHIELD series to blame?
Deadline reports that ABC has put the paranormal investigation drama Weird Desk on hold just a week after giving a thirteen episode straight-to-series order for it. The status of the series will be revisited after pilot season.
While the people in ABC liked the premise, by the time the project received a greenlight it was hard to get production running fast enough for a summer launch while keeping the price low. There is also some concern that the show may be too similar to Joss Whedon's pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., a spin-off of The Avengers. There are some rumors that Marvel had objections to the new show. So for now, Weird Desk is on hold. ABC still has Mistresses ready for the summer.
Weird Desk is produced by Canadian production company Shaftesbury and distributed by ABC Studios. It was written by Carl Binder and David Titcher.
Here's a synopsis: Based on the alleged real-life mysteries from this world and beyond, it centers on the workings of a clandestine organization rumored to be named "Weird Desk." Working above the levels of top secret and above the office of the President, the unit is the destination for mysterious intelligence rerouted from the CIA and NSA. Tasked with investigating and solving occurrences of the paranormal, supernatural and sometimes extra-terrestrial, "Weird Desk" is led by Morgan, an obstinate, socially inept and brilliant man who would now be dead if it weren't for his special forces trained partner, Rosetta.
