On track to a huge opening weekend...
Coming Soon reports that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned $12.4 million last night during midnight screenings in over 3,000 theaters. $1.6 million came from IMAX theaters.
The current opening record in December is I am Legend with $77.2 million in 2007, followed by James Cameron's Avatar with $77 million. Avatar made $26.8 million on opening day (after $3.5 million in midnight showings). The Hobbit has already made half that amount, so it's possible that it could have an opening day larger than both, at around $36 million or more. This would be a new record for the month of December.
