Plus A Christmas Story and twenty-two others...
The 2012 list of films added to the National Film Registry has been revealed. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced the twenty-five films that have been chosen for inclusion within the Registry, which was established by Congress in 1989 to preserve films that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films," showcasing the range and diversity of American film heritage to increase awareness for its preservation. Included in the films added to Registry this year are Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Christmas Story, Dirty Harry, The Times of Harvey Milk and The Matrix.
"These films are not selected as the 'best' American films of all time but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture," said Billington. "They reflect who we are as people and as a nation."
