Producer Dan Lin provides an update...
In an interview with Collider, producer Dan Lin revealed that a third Sherlock Holmes films is still in development at Warner Bros. This is even though there are two television series (BBC's Sherlock and CBS' Elementary) currently airing.
The first two films were directed by Guy Ritchie in 2009 and 2011 and star Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. Both films earned over $500 million each worldwide. In October of 2011, Warner Bros hired Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) to write the screenplay. Jude Law previously showed enthusiasm for returning to the series.
On the status of the film: "Yeah, it's still in development. Drew Pearce is working on the script and Downey, as you know, is still finishing Iron Man 3 so we're waiting for Downey to finish that movie and to get a script from Drew."
On if the sequel is a high priority for the studio: "Yes, it is a high priority for the studio and all for the filmmakers involved."
On waiting for the script: "Yeah, well we want to make the right movie. We got a great response to the second movie and frankly the Moriarty character sets such a high bar that we want to make sure we're telling the right story for the third movie."
On what to expect: "I don't want to go into details about that I just want to say that there will be some new locations, new settings for the third movie. Just like Sherlock for the second movie took us in a new location; the third movie will take us to a new location as well."
