[Movies] J.J. Abrams Allows Dying Star Trek Fan To See Unfinished Cut Of Star Trek Into Darkness Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.03.2013
Thanks to an internet campaign...
Yahoo Movies reports that J.J. Abrams has granted the wish of a dying fan to see Star Trek: Into Darkness, even though the film is technically unfinished.
A friend of a terminally ill man named Dan posted as ideeyut on Reddit to say that Dan had two forms of cancer in the past three years. He had over ten hospital visits and other health problems. He's a huge Star Trek fan and movie buff and was disappointed that the nine-minute Into Darkness preview didn't play before an IMAX screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He likely wouldn't have been able to see the film in theaters, because doctors only gave him weeks to live.
After the post went up on Reddit, readers went on Twitter and Facebook. Some blogs picked up the story and a few days later Abrams responded. Dan and his wife were given a special screening of an unfinished cut of the film.
His wife later posted: "Hi everyone, it's Daniel's wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture."
She thanked Abrams and the Internet for the "heartwarming gift" and added: "We were so touched when [Abrams] was concerned that we wouldn't 100% enjoy the screening as it's still being worked on....... Be assured we enjoyed it 110%!"
