[Movies] Guillermo del Toro Says GLaDOS' Voice Will be Tweaked in Final Cut of Pacific Rim
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 01.06.2013

Director Guillermo del Toro spoke with the Toronto Sun regarding the issue of Ellen McLain's voice in Pacific Rim. McLain is most famous as the voice of GLaDOS from the Portal games. In Pacific Rim, she voices the AI computer system for the Jaegers, and in the trailer for the movie you might've noticed a familiar sounding computer AI voice to GLaDOS from Portal.

According to del Toro though, the final version of McLain in the movie will be tweaked and will sound less like the GLaDOS character. Del Toro explains, "I wanted very much to have her, because I'm a big Portal fan. But just as a wink. She's not cake-obsessed. She's not out to destroy humanity." In addition, Del Toro approached the producers of the games at Valve to get permission to basically use the voice of GLaDOS in the movie. He stated: "I said, ‘Look, there's no A.I. I'd rather have than GlaDOS,' " he said. But McLain's voice in the movie, due in theatres July 12, has been modulated a bit to be less similar to the distinctive tone of Portal's unforgettable antagonist. "The filter we're using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GlaDOS."

Pacific Rim will open in 3D, 2D, and IMAX 3D theaters on July 12.
