MTV reports that James Franco is set to direct and star in an adaptation of James Ellroy's American Tabloid.
Franco was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote three of his movies including Interior: Leather Bar, which Franco said was "for all the '50 Shades of Grey' fans" and was described by Film.com reviewer Amanda Mae Meyncke as "part documentary and part narrative". It reinterprets lost footage from the Al Pacino movie Cruising. That's when he revealed information about the new film.
He said: "We're going to do 'American Tabloid' by James Ellroy. It's not all put together yet. It's still early. You're getting the scoop."
It's based on the 1995 novel of the same name, which follows law enforcement officers Pete Bondurant, Kemper Boyd and Ward Littell from 1958 through 1963. Their stories come to a head after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
This isn't the first time an adaptation was planned. Bruce Willis once had the rights to produce and star in a miniseries based on the book and Tom Hanks' Playtone production company tried it as well.
