[Movies] First Photo Released Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Julian Assange In Wikileaks Movie
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.23.2013

The Guardian has the first photo of Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in one of three planned productions about his life. It's for the film The Fifth Estate and will be released this year. It's directed by Bill Condon and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Bruhl, Laura Linney, Peter Capaldi. It's from a script by Josh Singer (The West Wing). Principal photography has started this week.

In the photo, Cumberbatch is with Daniel Bruhl as his Assange's confidant Daniel Domscheit-Berg. The film focuses on the early days of his site. It's based on Domscheit-Berg's book Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website and Guardian writers David Leigh and Luke Harding's WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy.

Condon said: "It may be decades before we understand the full impact of WikiLeaks and how it's revolutionised the spread of information. So this film won't claim any long view authority on its subject, or attempt any final judgment. We want to explore the complexities and challenges of transparency in the information age and, we hope, enliven and enrich the conversations WikiLeaks has already provoked."

It will be released on November 15 this year. It is being pushed as an awards contender for 2014.
