But it's still behind Return of the King...
Box Office Mojo (via Deadline) reports that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has passed both Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in worldwide box office. The Lord of the Rings trilogy has earned $3 billion in ticket sales.
An Unexpected Journey has earned $939,623,831 since its premiere on December 14, with foreign sales a higher portion of the total (69%). It passed $100 million in five days domestically and made $3.3 million in its latest week, a domestic total of $293.2 million. The total is short of all of the Lord of the Rings films, however. Return of the King earned $1.19 billion worldwide and won the Best Picture Oscar.
The next Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug, will be released on December 13, 2013. There and Back Again will be out on July 18, 2014.
