Plus a talk with Guillermo Del Toro...
USA Today has revealed new photos for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, and spoke with the director himself about the big summer film. It will be released on July 12.
De Toro is halfway through finishing the special effects but says that it is "the only movie I've done where I don't want it to end, frankly." He co-wrote the screenplay with Travis Beacham. He added that they are already working on a sequel.
The monsters in the film are called Kaiju, a Japanese word that translates to "strange beast". The monsters have appeared in everything from Godzilla to Gamera.
del Toro said: "I grew up with a steady kaiju diet. It's really creating a world that's been shaped by two anomalies: the giant monsters and the giant robots we create to fight them."
The robots are called Jaegers, which were inspired by Westerns. The pilots, one of whom is played by Charlie Hunnam (as Raleigh Becket) are called "riders", and move in the suits to put their machines into motion. Del Toro said: "We made it a point to put the sound of spurs like a cowboy."
He said the station is "basically the Alamo." He also talked about Marshal Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba. He said: "He's not playing second banana. He's at the center of the conflict. He's the only guy who cannot give up."
He compared the fights to gunfighters in a duel, although he noted one of the monsters shoots lava out of his mouth.
While he said it's hard to choose which Kaiju is his favorite "because they are like my children," he likes the creature called Leatherback. He added: "I find him very, very endearing. He has a big belly so I identify with him. He's no doubt my main man."
