The lead has been found...
Deadline reports that Chris Pratt (Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty, Parks and Recreation) will play the role of Star-Lord in director James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Star-Lord is the leader of the group and was created by a human mother and an alien father.
Marvel had test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne before settling on Pratt. Zachary Levi and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were also rumored for the role. The studio is aiming for an August 1, 2014 release date.
The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1969 but didn't get a series until the 1990s. Star-Lord (real name Peter Quill) leads the team to protect the solar system from an evil alien race. The heroes are from another dimension in the future. In the comics, the Guardians worked with The Avengers, so it's possible the two will work together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
