[Movies] Scarlett Johansson Says She Auditioned For Fantine in Les Miserables
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 02.12.2013

Scarlett Johansson says that she auditioned for the role that Anne Hathaway ended up with in Les Miserables. Johansson told Broadway.com that she auditioned for the role, but fate was not on her side as she came down with laryngitis before the audition.

"Yes, I did," she said in response to the question of whether she auditioned. "I sang my little heart out...I auditioned with laryngitis. I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis."

As to whether she was afraid of auditioning, she said, "No, are you kidding? The jazz hands kid inside me was just over the moon!"

She added that things all worked out for the best, saying, "I think, looking at the film now, there's no possible way I ever could have topped that performance [by Anne Hathaway]. It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be. But, yes, the audition itself brought back so many memories of auditioning for Les Mis for the young Cosette, and it was fun for me to revisit that."
