[Movies] The Hunger Games Screenwriter To Write Competing Mummy Script
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.14.2013

Vulture reports that Universal plans to reboot The Mummy, with Joe Roth producing and Len Wiseman directing.

In order to make sure it doesn't fall apart before a 2014 release, the have hired another screenwriter to work on a new script, which means two will be written at the same time. Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) is working on a version set in present day. Meanwhile, Billy Ray (The Hunger Games) is writing another script, also set in present day.

The studio believes it doing this will get it at least one script that is ready to shoot by late summer or early fall. One source said: "Studios don't shoot movies anymore. They shoot release dates. My suspicion is that one of them will be a ‘structure-and-body' man, and one's going to be a ‘character-and-dialogue' man — and that they'll then just gang-bang them together into one script, crediting both writers."

The source added that this usually never happens "because credit arbitration is usually a nightmare."
