Wallis will play the new Annie...
Sony Pictures announced in an official press release that Quvenzhané Wallis, the Academy Award nominated star of Beasts of the Souther Wild, will play the title role in the new Annie movie for Columbia Pictures. The new movie based on the popular Broadway musical will be directed by Will Gluck.
The new movie will be produced by James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith through Overbrook Entertainment and by Shawn "JAY Z" Carter, Jay Brown, and Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith through Marcy Media. The new project will be a new version of the Broadway musical based on the Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie. The musical debuted on stage in 1977 before it became a live action movie in 1982 directed by John Huston. Rob Marshall made a made-for-TV movie of the musical again in 1999.
The movie is set to start filming in the fall and is slated for a 2014 holiday release. The role was first said to go to Smiths' 12-year-old daughter Willow Smith. Wallis is 9-years-old and is the youngest person to ever receive an Oscar nomination.
