Deadline reports that Tom Shadyac (Bruce Almighty, Liar, Liar, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Evan Almighty) is in talks to direct the English-language remake of The Intouchables. The French film, which was released in 2011, is about the relationship between a rich quadriplegic and his new caretaker and was an incredible hit with $426.6 million worldwide on a budget of about $12 million.
Shadyac suffered a near-death experience in a cycling accident right after making Evan Almighty in 2007; he was nearly left permanently disabled due to post-concussion symptoms that rendered him hyper-sensitive to light and noise. He recovered and changed his life dramatically to that of a philanthropist, which was captured in the 2011 documentary I Am.
