[Movies] Neill Blomkamp Says He Wanted Eminem To Star In Elysium
Posted by Joseph Lee on 07.20.2013

In an interview with Wired, director Neill Blomkamp revealed he originally wanted Eminem to star in Elysium in the role now played by Matt Damon. Eminem was interested, but only if shooting took place in Detroit. Here are highlights:

On his belief that the world will end up like his sequel: "The dice are going to be rolled, and either we're going to end up coming out of this through technological innovation or we're going to go down the road of a Malthusian catastrophe."

On why his movie isn't meant to have a message: "Anybody who thinks they can change the world by making films is sorely mistaken."

On why he thought getting out of the Halo film was a "complete blessing": "When any young director gets hired by a studio to do a $125 million film based on a preexisting piece of intellectual property, they're climbing into the meat grinder. And what you're coming out with on the other side is a generic, heavily studio-controlled pile of garbage that ends up on the side of Burger King wrappers."
