After The Man from U.N.C.L.E...
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros has acquired the rights to Thomas Kelly's (writer and producer of BBC America's Copper) novel Empire Rising. The film is a love story set against the construction of the Empire State Building. Guy Ritchie is in talks to direct. Kelly will write the adaptation. Ritchie and his partner Lionel Wigram will produce.
Here's a synopsis of the 2006 novel: It is 1930, and ground has just been broken for the Empire State Building. One of the thousands of men who will come to work high above the city is Michael Briody, an Irish immigrant torn between his desire to make a new life in America and his pledge to gather money and arms for the Irish republican cause. When he meets Grace Masterson, an alluring artist who is depicting the great skyscraper's rise from her houseboat on the East River, Briody's life suddenly turns exhilarating -- and dangerous - -for Grace is also a paramour of Johnny Farrell, Mayor Jimmy Walker's liaison with Tammany Hall and the underworld.
Niija Kuykendall will oversee for Warner Bros. Peter Eskelsen will executive produce.
Kelly is also using an older New York in Copper which follows an Irish cop in 1865. Kelly executive produces that series and is also the showrunner. He was also a writer and supervising producer on CBS' Blue Bloods, which was about a family of New York cops.
This is the latest deal for Warner Bros and the team of Ritchie and Wigram. Ritchie's last three films (including the two Sherlock Holmes movies) have been released by the studio. Ritchie is currently in pre-production on The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. It will be the first production under the two's Warner-based banner. Ritchie will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Wigram. The two will produce with John Davis.
