Robert Rodriguez' film coming to Latin America TV...
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Television and Teleset will adapt Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi into a TV series for the Latin American Market.
The series is based on the 1992 film of the same name (and its 1995 sequel Desperado, which starred Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek). It will air on Sony TV across the region. This is the third SPT project for the market. In May, Univision announced that the company would make a Spanish-language version of Breaking Bad called Metastasis, which airs next year.
For El Mariachi, Sony will produce 70 episodes to start. This is the first series produced by SPT and Teleset entirely in Mexico.
Angelica Guerra, SPT SVP and managing director of Latin America and US Hispanic production, said, "Much like the film, El Mariachi offers audiences a unique blend of high-stakes action and romance. Staying true to the story, we are producing the series in Mexico shooting in magnificent locations and utilizing some of the country's best talent."
The series will follow Martin Aguirre, a musician at war with the drug cartels over "honor, love and revenge." Ivan Arana will play Aguirre. Marta Higareda (Street Kings, Borderland) will play Celeste Sandoval and Julio Bracho plays Fernando Sandoval.
