[Movies] Idris Elba To Star In Beasts Of No Nation Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.21.2013
A film seven years in the making...
Deadline reports that Idris Elba (Luther, Pacific Rim, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom) will star in director Cary Fukunaga's (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) Beasts of No Nation for Red Crown Productions. It is an adaptation of the novel by Uzodinma Iweala.
Here's a synopsis of the book: In this stunning debut novel, Agu, a young boy in an unnamed West African nation, is recruited into a unit of guerrilla fighters as civil war engulfs his country. Haunted by his father's own death at the hands of militants, Agu is vulnerable to the dangerous yet paternal nature of his new Commander. While the war rages on, Agu becomes increasingly divorced from the life he had known before the conflict started—a life of school friends, church services, and time with his family still intact.
Elba will play the lead role of Commander and he will also produce.
Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Riva Marker will produce for Red Crown with Fukunaga for Parliament of Owls and Amy Kaufman for Primary Productions. Daniel Crown and Bill Benenson will executive produce and Red Crown will fund the movie.
Lundberg said: "We fell in love with Iweala's powerful narrative and Idris and Cary are a tremendous pairing."
Fukunaga added: "This project has been seven years in the making, so to say I'm excited to start shooting this — and with Idris Elba as lead — would be me trying to play it cool. Red Crown has real moxie standing behind this story."
