Joining Carrie Underwood...
Stephen Moyer (True Blood) is set to join Carrie Underwood in NBC's live production of The Sound of Music on December 5. Moyer will play World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp, the single father of seven children. He lives in Austria, which is on the verge of World War II. He hires the young governess named Maria to take care of his children and eventually the two get engaged.
Moyer previously finished a three-night run in July at the Hollywood Bowl for Chicago, where he played lawyer Billy Flynn.
The three-hour production is based on the original 1959 Broadway show, which starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. It won a Tony Award for best musical and another for best actress (Martin). It was adapted into a 1965 film that starred Julie Andrew and Christopher Plummer. That film won five Academy Awards, including best picture.
Moyer is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He is a veteran of the stage in the UK and spent time with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic in England. He has played the lead role in Romeo and Juliet and others.
This new version will be executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford are directing.
