Three other people considered for supporting roles...
Variety reports that Chadwick Boseman (42) will play James Brown in a biopic about the Godfather of Soul from Universal and Imagine Entertainment. Tate Taylor (The Help) will direct. Imagine's Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce with Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman through Jagged Films. Trish Hofmann and Peter Afterman will executive produce. Jez and John Henry Butterworth wrote the script, from a draft by Steven Baigelman.
The film follows Brown's rise from extreme poverty in Georgia to a famous and influential R&B singer with songs in the 1960s and 1970s including "Please, Please, Please," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and more. He died in 2006 at age 73.
Co-President of Production Peter Cramer and Vice President of Production Maradith Frenkel will oversee for Universal. Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant and Taylor announced that it will be shot in Mississippi. Grazer has been trying to make a biopic for over ten years. It gained momentum when Taylor came on as a producer. Universal has been working on budget issues and meeting with potential leads. Several actors were up for the role but Boseman was selected as the top choice. No offer could be made until the film was greenlit. Boseman can next be seen in Summit's NFL movie Draft Day with Kevin Costner.
Meanwhile, The Wrap reports that Taylor is considering bringing on Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Nelsan Ellis for supporting roles. All three were in The Help. No offers have been made yet.
The film has finally been greenlit now that a lead has been found. Jagger, meanwhile, will also be shown as a character in the film with Keith Richards, Little Richard and Syd Nathan, the founder of Kings Records.
