[Movies] Vin Diesel Confirms He Is Playing Groot In Guardians of the Galaxy Posted by Joseph Lee on 08.27.2013
Through motion capture...
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vin Diesel confirmed that he will be providing motion-capture and voice work for Groot in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. This comes after he hinted that he was meeting with Marvel, and then weeks later, posted an image of the alien plant monster that appears in the film.
He also said that he was originally meeting with Marvel to play another character and noted of that one, "It would come out in 2016 or 2017 and potentially launch the third phase."
But while at the San Diego Comic-Con to promote Riddick in July, he learned that fans didn't want to wait that long to see him in a Marvel movie. The only problem was deciding who he could play, as his schedule includes a seventh Fast & Furious movie, along with others in various stages of development.
He said, "What can I say about Groot? I can say something about Marvel. I take my hat off to them for being so creative and thinking outside of the box. With my schedule, it was almost impossible to imagine I could do anything immediate. I guess after they watched Iron Giant, or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character -- or the strangest Marvel character that's ever hit film -- and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice. Now it's just up to my reps to allow that to happen."
A teaser shown at Comic-Con and Disney's D23 confirmed that Groot will be in the film, but he did not speak at that time. The film, starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, will be out on August 1, 2014. Riddick, meanwhile, opens this year on September 6.
