[Movies] Benedict Cumberbatch To Join Star Wars: Episode VII?
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 09.02.2013

We've almost gone a week without a new casting rumor for Star Wars: Episode VII, so it makes sense that we're due. Film Chronicles reports that Benedict Cumberbatch, who worked with J.J. Abrams on Star Trek Into Darkness, will be confirmed as a member of the new film soon. The site is definitive about it but doesn't cite any specific sources, instead noting the Star Trek connection and the fact that Cumberbatch's schedule is free now that he's dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak.

Cumberbatch said while promoting Into Darkness earlier this year, "I've already asked him (Abrams) if I can be a lightsaber and we're in talks – about whirring sounds and the rates for the lights and everything [laughs]." Whether there's truth to the joke is yet to be confirmed, obviously.

Recent rumors have included both Rachel Hurd-Wood and Alex Pettyfer being linked with roles, with Hurd-Wood tipped (again, unconfirmed) to play Jaina Solo.

What we do know for sure about the film is that Abrams is directing from a script by Michael Arndt and that the film will release sometime in 2015.
