[Movies] Bret Easton Ellis Claims Robert Pattinson Was First Choice For Fifty Shades of Grey
Posted by Joseph Lee on 09.03.2013

NME reports that author Bret Easton Ellis claims that Robert Pattinson was EL James "first choice" to star in Fifty Shades of Grey. James is the author of the three novels that follow a sexual relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey. He announced yesterday that Charlie Hunnam will play Grey and Dakota Johnson will play Steele.

Pattinson being the first choice makes sense, as EL James originally developed the series as Twilight fan fiction involving Pattinson's character Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart's character Bella Swann.

The roles of Grey and Steele were the subject of many rumors after Universal and Focus Features acquired the film rights in March 2012. Emma Watson and Mila Kunis were rumored for Steele while Henry Cavill, Ryan Gosling and Ian Somerhalder were rumored for Grey.

Ellis wrote on Twitter:

He previously said that he wanted to write the film's script, but revealed in August of last year that he was off the list of potential writers. The job eventually went to Kelly Marcel. Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy) will direct. The film will be released on August 1, 2014.
