[Movies] David Koechner Says Anchorman 2's Champ Is an 'Innocent Racist'

"He doesn't think about it..."
In an interview with IGN, David Koechner talked about how some of the jokes in Anchorman 2 revolve around race and what Champ Kind's feelings on the subject are. Here are highlights:
On if Champ is a racist: "Champ is almost an innocent racist. He doesn't think about it. It wouldn't occur to him that he's being racist. Which may be worse. He's an uniformed racist. Or a casual racist. And he's a misogynist. And a horrible alcoholic. And he's also a homophobe who has latent tendencies."
On why people love the original film: "It's a very smart satire but it's dressed us as a dumb, broad comedy. That's what I think. That's the short answer. It's a brilliant satire about the white American male."
On if it could be a franchise: "Well Will [Ferrell] and Adam are brilliant and cautious. They don't do it just because. If they feel like there's another one, that would be equally fun and exciting for the audience, then I think they'd do it. If they had a great idea. I'd say if they did it again it would be bonkers crazy. I think the original one – the first script they wrote had them at some point on an airplane and it crashes and they are attacked by monkeys. That's the direction I think they'd have to take. Outlandish. So if this one is as successful as we all anticipate, I think a third one would be delicious and exciting and surprising. It won't be a re-tread."
