[Movies] WikiLeaks Founder Writes Personal Letter to Benedict Cumberbatch Over The Fifth Estate Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 10.09.2013
Assange decries the film in which Cumberbatch portrays himů
Controversial website WikiLeaks published a personal letter that website founder, Julian Assange, sent to actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Assange in the film The Fifth Estate.
The letter is dated January 15, 2013 and describes the film as "wretched," and something Assange that will "distort events and subtract from public understanding."
Assange wrote: "I believe you are a good person, but I do not believe that this film is a good film. I do not believe it is going to be positive for me or the people I care about. I believe that it is going to be overwhelmingly negative for me and the people I care about."
He added: "I believe that you should reconsider your involvement in this enterprise. Consider the consequences of your cooperation with a project that vilifies and marginalises a living political refugee to the benefit of an entrenched, corrupt and dangerous state."
WikiLeaks wrote in a press release accompanying the letter that, "Cumberbatch's reply to this email was courteous and considered. The actor communicated to Assange that aspects of the film's script were troubling to him."
You can read the full letter at the above link. The Fifth Estate is due out for an October 18 U.S. release. Previously, Cumberbatch said he considered Assange a hero.
