Coming Soon reports that Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad), Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh and Glenn Howerton have joined Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman and Colin Hanks in the FX limited series Fargo. The series is based on the Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions and Steve Stark, President of Television Production for MGM Television, made the announcement today.
Production on the series will begin next month in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It will premiere next spring on FX. It will feature a new "true crime" story with a new case and new characters. It will keep the "trademark humor, murder and 'Minnesota nice'" that was featured in the original.
Billy Bob Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, a manipulative man who changes the life of small town insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman). Colin Hanks plays Duluth Police Deputy Gus Grimly, a single father who has to put his own safety at risk when he meets a killer. Odenkirk will play Deputy Bill Olson, a Bemidji deupty with senoirity over his younger, smarter and more ambitious deputy Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman). Oliver Platt will play Stavros Milos, the "Supermarket King of Minnesota".
Kate Walsh will play Gina Hess, a former stripper and mother of two teenaged twin boys. Glenn Howerton will play Don Chumph, an "ambitious" personal trainer. Joey King will play Gus' daughter Greta, Peter Breitmayer will play Gus' superior officer Lieutenant Schmidt, Tom Musgrave will play Lester's boss at the Bo Munk Insurance Shop (Bo Munk) and Josh Close will play Lester's more successful and younger brother Ron. Russell Harvard and Adam Goldberg will play members of the Fargo Crime Syndicate, Mr. Wrench (the muscle) and Mr. Numbers (the mouth), respectively.
The series will run for ten episodes. It is written by Noah Hawley. Adam Bernstein (30 Rock) will direct the first episode. The executive producers are Hawley, Warren Littlefield, Joel & Ethan Coen, and Geyer Kosinski. It is produced by FX Productions and MGM Television. MGM TV will also handle worldwide distribution outside of the US and Canada. They are the lead studio.
