The Asgardian will return in a big way...
According to The Hollywood Reporter, pre-tracking information for Marvel Studios and Disney's Thor: the Dark World (starring Chris Hemsworth) has it getting one of the best November openings of all time, especially for a film opening earlier in the month. The sequel is currently set to open with $75 million. The film opens on November 8.
This would pass up the $65.7 million opening of Thor in May 2011, which ended up earning $449 million worldwide. Iron Man 3, which was released in May of this year, is the top film of 2013 so far with $1.2 billion worldwide. It's believed that Thor 2 will benefit from The Avengers, just as Iron Man 3 did. The film featured Hemsworth as Thor and Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, along with other Marvel characters. It earned $1.5 billion worldwide to become the #3 film of all time behind Avatar and Titanic.
Interest for Thor 2 is high among all groups of fans, especially among younger females and Hispanics. The film also stars Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba. Kenneth Branagh will not return to direct, instead Alan Taylor will take over.
The film is one year after The Avengers as Thor reunites with Jane Foster (Portman) and tries to save his planet from a new enemy (Christopher Eccleston). To do this, he forms an alliance with Loki (Hiddleston).
The highest-grossing opening weekend for a film in early November is Skyfall, which brought in $88.4 milion. The Twilight Saga: New Moon has the best November opening in general with $142.8 million, after it opened on November 20, 2009.
