City of Ashes saved by overseas box office...
Most people were ready to put a fork in the Mortal Instruments franchise after City of Bones failed to make a splash at the box office this summer. The film, based on the young adult fantasy series by Cassandra Clare, was the latest young adult franchise that failed to cash in on the post-Twilight vacuum and brought in only $31.2 million domestically. However, the film has topped out at almost $100 million worldwide and Constantin Films told THR that it has restarted production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes.
Martin Moszkowicz noted that fan support saved the film, saying, "The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going. It's been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles...We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise (for City of Ashes)."
He added, "The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think. That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment."
The sequel will reunite the cast from the first film including Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Jemima West, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Sigourney Weaver.
