UPDATE: According to Marcia Wallace's son Mikey, she passed away due to complications of pneumonia. The reports that breast cancer played a role are false.
Original: TMZ reports that Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, passed away last night in Los Angeles at the age of 70. She died at home with her family at her side. She had been sick for the past few months but it's unknown exactly what the heath issue was.
She has been on television since the 1970s. She was receptionist Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart Show and appeared on several game show panels like Hollywood Squares, The $25,000 Pyramid and Match Game. She was also a huge activist for breast cancer research after she was diagnosed in 1985.
Meanwhile, if you're wondering how this will affect her character on The Simpsons, executive producer Al Jean said that even with her death that she will not be the character that gets killed off this season. It has been revealed that one of the characters will die and stay gone this year.
Jean said they had been writing a storyline based on her marriage to Ned Flanders. Wallace had been unable to do her work on the show due to her declining health but producers were hoping for the best. The character will likely be retired this season, but it's unknown how she will leave.
Jean added: "Marcia was such a sweet and talented woman ... she will be missed."
411 would like to offer our condolences to her family, friends and fans.
