They're creepy and they're kooky...
Variety reports that MGM is in final negotiations with BermanBraun's Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun to produce an animated film based on The Addams Family, which started life as a cartoon from Charles Addams. There were over 150 single panel cartoons of the mysterious and spooky family published in The New Yorker between 1939 and Addams' death in 1988. The characters became famous through the ABC sitcom that ran from 1964 and 1966. They also had several other TV shows, two live-action films at Paramount and a Broadway musical.
Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride, Monster House) will write the screenplay. Andrew Mittman and Kevin Miserocchi will executive produce. Chris Meledandri's Illumination was previously developing a stop-motion film that would be directed by Tim Burton, but it abandoned the project.
MGM and BermanBraun announced a first-look film deal in June as part of an agreement to develop content on TV and cable. BermanBraun's current shows include NBC's Camp, HGTV's Garage Sale Wars and Showtime's Polyarmory. They are developing Ben Stiller's Rentaghost for FOX and an adaptation of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. It is also teaming up with AOL to change the Moviefone service as a broader place for entertainment news and content.
