The Hollywood Reporter is predicting that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire could pass $175 million in its debut, which would give it the highest opening weekend of the year behind Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million) and the second highest of all time behind The Avengers ($207.4 million). Lionsgate is being more conservative than that, predicting an opening weekend in the $140 million to $150 million range.
Sequels obviously tend to do better than the first film in a series. The first Twilight brought in $69.6 million. A year later, Twilight: New Moon took in $142.8 million. Some industry experts believe Catching Fire could even bring in as much as $190 million.
The first Hunger Games movie, based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, brought in $152.5 million in March 2012. The film went on to make $691.2 million worldwide and $408 million domestically. Catching Fire, which cost more than the first film ($130 million vs $78 million) features most of the cast returning, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Elizabeth Banks. The film has a new director in Francis Lawrence (Water for Elephants, I Am Legend).
