While Bad Grandpa holds well...
Ender's Game finished on top of the box office this weekend. The sci-fi adaption of Orson Scott Card's novel opened with $28 million to claim the top spot, a tiny bit above the mid-twenties that the studio was estimating. The Asa Butterfield-led film averaged $8,218 from the 3,407 theaters that it opened in; it added $9.1 million overseas for a worldwide total of $37.1 million. The decent B+ CinemaScore it received may help it, though with Thor: The Dark World coming next week it will still have a tricky time making back its $110 million budget.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa held on well as it slipped a spot to #2 in its second week. The film brought in $20.5 million, down just 36% for the best second-weekend drop of the franchise's history. (By comparison, Jackass 3-D dropped 56% in its second weekend.) The film has now grossed $62.1 million domestically and $79.7 million worldwide from a budget of just $15 million.
Last Vegas opened in third place, bringing in $16.5 million. CBS Films' ensemble comedy was right about in line with studio expectations. The film averaged $5,390 from 3,065 theaters and should be just find with an A- CinemaScore to bolster its word of mouth. The film had a fairly low budget at $28 million so the studio should be looking at a profit here.
Free Birds opened disappointingly, finishing at #4 with $16 million. Relativity's animated film was pegged for around the $20 million range; it's the lowest-opening animated film since Escape From Planet Earth back in February. The film opened in 3,736 theaters for a $4,336 average; the A- CinemaScore should help out however, along with the Thanksgiving-esque theme as we get closer to that holiday. The film had a budget of $55 million.
Gravity was down three spots in its fifth week, dropping to #5 with $13.1 million weekend. The Sandra Bullock/George Clooney film has now grossed $219.2 million domestically and $426.7 million worldwide from a budget of $100 million; it is the #8 grossing film of the year so far domestically and is likely to rise at least another couple of spots.
Also down three spot to #6 in its fourth week was Tom Hanks' Captain Phillips, which brought in $8.5 million. The fact-based drama about the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009 has now made $82.6 million so far domestically and $109.3 million worldwide from a budget of $55 million.
Fox Searchlight's drama 12 Years a Slave was up one spot in its third weekend, finishing at #7 as it continues its expansion with $4.6 million. The film, which stars Chiwotel Ejiofor and is directed by Steve McQueen, has a total of $8.8 million and will only continue to rise in the charts from here as it expands. The movie's budget is estimated at $20 million.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 was down three spots to #8 in its sixth weekend with $4.2 million. The Sony CGI-animated sequel has a domestic total of $106.2 million and a worldwide total of $155.4 million from a $78 million budget.
Kimberly Peirce's Carrie remake slipped three spots to #9 in its third weekend with $3.4 million. The film has grossed a total of $32 million domestically and $35 million worldwide from a budget of $30 million.
Ridley Scott's The Counselor took a heavy fall, down six spots to #10 in its seconde weekend. The legal thriller brought in $3.3 million dollars, registering a much higher-than-average 59% drop from last weekend. The film has grossed $13.4 million domestically and $16.8 million worldwide; its budget was $25 million.
The weekend box office tally was $127.9 million, down 8% from last year's take of $138.4 million that was led by Wreck-It Ralph's $49 million opening weekend.
Note: Numbers include Sunday estimates and are three-day estimates. A studio recoups 55% of a film's grosses on average, meaning it needs to approximately double its budget to be profitable during its theatrical run.
