[Movies] Jake Gyllenhaal In Talks To Replace Eminem In Southpaw Posted by Joseph Lee on 11.04.2013
A new boxing movie...
The Wrap reports that Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners) is set to star in the boxing drama Southpaw, which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) for The Weinstein Company. The film originally was set to star Eminem.
It was originally sold to Dreamworks with Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) writing the script. Dreamworks abandoned the project and MGM acquired it to distribute through Sony. It was then put into turnaround before the Weinstein Company got it. Gyllenhaal would play a left-handed boxer who wins a title but endures a tragedy. He then attempts to put his life back together to earn the respect of his daughter.
Fuqua previously told The Los Angeles Times that "the heart of the movie is about a man learning to be a father."
The father-and-son team of Alan and Peter Riche will produce through Riche Productions, along with Harvey Weinstein. Southpaw will start production next year.
