[Movies] Steven Spielberg and Javier Bardem To Make Epic Film Based On Montezuma
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.06.2014

Deadline reports that Steven Spielberg is in talks to direct the script Montezuma, which focuses on the relationship between Montezuma and Hernando Cortez, which ended when Cortez led the Spanish infiltration into Mexico. Javier Bardem is up for the role of Cortez. The script is almost fifty years old and was written by Dalton Trumbo (1960's Spartacus, Johnny Got A Gun).

It will be rewritten by Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List), who will also produce with Spielberg and Dreamworks. The rights are controlled by Dreamworks but Zaillian's first look deal is at Fox, so it remains to be seen which studio gets it. He is currently producing Exodus for Fox, which is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Christian Bale.

The film could be retitled Cortez as it will be from his point of view. It's considered one of the best unproduced scripts in history. Trumbo wrote it for actor/producer Kirk Douglas (Spartacus, Lonely Are the Brave). He turned in a 205 page draft in 1965 with Martin Rift set to direct but it never happened.

It's unknown if this will be Spielberg's next project. He was previously linked to Robopocalypse and American Sniper. The later film will star Bradley Cooper as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, with Clint Eastwood set to direct. Spielberg still hopes to direct Robopocalypse eventually.
