[Movies] Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana Sign On For All Three Avatar Sequels

Coming Soon reports that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington have signed on for three Avatar sequels that will begin production later this year, with James Cameron directing.

The 2009 original saw Worthington's Jake Sully stuck in a wheelchair, before he linked his mind with a Na'vi "Avatar" on the world of Pandora. He helped save the world from humans set to mine it for resources after his relationship with Neytiri (Saldana) grew and he became one of the Na'vi.

Cameron said: "Jake Sully is rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoë captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they'll be returning with us to Pandora."

Cameron said last year that he's making three sequels to the 2009 original. He hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes) and Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger) to work with him on the sequels, which will be filmed back-to-back. The first sequel arrives in December 2016, followed by anotheri in December 2017 and another in December 2018. Cameron and Jon Landau will produce through Lightstorm Entertainment for 20th Century Fox.

The first film is the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.8 billion earned worldwide. It's also the top-selling blu-ray of all time. It won Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director and won for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.
