Cameron wins another plagiarism lawsuit...
James Cameron is three for three in lawsuits claiming that Avatar was stolen from other people. As previously reported, Cameron won lawsuits filed against him by two separate individuals alleging that Avatar was directly taken from their respective sources; now, THR reports that Cameron has won another lawsuit, this one filed by Bryant Moore, who claimed that his scripts for films titled Aquatica and Pollination with distinct similarities had ended up in the hands of Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.
The judge dismissed the claim, which was for $1 billion, saying that the stories are distinctly different and that the chief similarity--love in a science fiction setting--doesn't qualify for protection.
The judge wrote, "Even at the highest level of generality, the plots of the works at issue here are quite different. Avatar is about a paraplegic ex-Marine, Jake Sully, who takes over a genetically engineered avatar body to study the indigenous people of the planet Pandora. … Pollination is a story about two warring groups of humans: pollinators and descendants. … Aquatica is an underwater adventure story about two warring factions, one of whom is a ruthless evil tribe attempting to dominate the planet."
