[Movies] First Photos Released For The Giver
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.25.2014

EW.com has two photos from the adaptation of Lois Lowry's 1993 novel The Giver. Jeff Bridges, who will play the titular Giver, has been trying to get a film made for 20 years until Harvey Weinstein came on board. At one point he wanted his father Lloyd to play The Giver before he died. The film also stars Brenton Thwaites as Jonah, a boy living in a community of "sameness" until he he told to receive all the good and evil moments of history from the Giver. The film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa. Here are highlights of an interview with the cast and crew

Director Phillip Noyce on the history given to Jonas in the film: "The past is considered to be potentially polluting. This is a world where complications are eliminated. Jonas himself goes on a journey as he finds out what's missing. He starts to investigate what's causing it. And that's the beauty. That's what makes the book so popular, it's an investigation in ways of living."

Bridges on making Jonas sixteen instead of twelve like in the book: "I originally kind of balked at the idea of making the lead character older. We were so lucky to have Thwaites play this role. He does a beautiful job."

Bridges on Lowry being okay with the changes: "I was happy to hear from Lois that she wasn't so concerned about all the facts being the same as in the book. The spirit of the story is there."
