UPDATE 2: TMZ has added to their story (link below), noting that according to sources Hoffman was found in his bathroom and that police found ten glassine envelopes, two of which had heroin. The others are believed to have been empty. The site says that the envelopes were marked with "Ace of Spades" and an ace of hearts symbol, which are brands of heroin.
The site adds that according to law enforcement sources, Hoffman was supposed to pick up his children at 9 AM but didn't show up. A playwright and a friend became concerned and came over, finding Hoffman alone in the apartment.
UPDATE: More information is being reported in the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman at the age of forty-six. According to the New York Post, Hoffman was found fully clothed by his personal assistant at around 11 AM EST. The assitant immediately called 911 and police arrived, finding heroin in the apartment.
The site reports that Hoffman looked "slightly disheveled and pasty" at Sundance in January and refused to do any interviews, according to witnesses. Police also found a charred spoon in the kitchen sink according to a source. The death is believed to be accidental and there was no suicide note.
According to a neighbor, Hoffman was a "troubled soul" who was "off and on" with his longtime girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell. The woman said, "He did not look well recently — like he was out of it. I think him and his woman friend were off and on. He lived down here for a long time and was well liked, but everyone knew he had substance-abuse problems."
A statement by Hoffman's family said, "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone."
Lionsgate has said that Hoffman was nearly complete with his filming on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 with only seven days left. His death is not expected to affect the release schedule for the films.
ORIGNAL:TMZ reports that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead today in his Greenwich apartment in New York City from an apparent drug overdose. Authorities apparently found a needle in his arm. An investigation at his apartment is still ongoing. Hoffman has struggled with drug problems in the past and checked himself into rehab for heroin last year in May.
Hoffman had previously been clean for several years before relapsing in 2012.
