[Movies] Sony Pictures Developing The Equalizer 2
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 02.24.2014

In another example of a studio banking on a film being a potential franchise, Sony Pictures is developing a sequel to Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer remake. The Wrap reports that Richard Wenk, who wrote the first film, has signed for a second.

The practice of greenlighting sequels before the first film releases is becoming increasingly common and has an up and down record. Warner Bros. paid off big time when they started writing The Hangover II before the first one was out and Marvel's Cinematic Universe could arguable be pointed to as a success, as they have been developing several films ahead for some time. On the flip side, Screen Gems ended up with some egg on its face with the Mortal Instruments franchise after the first one underperformed. The second is still moving forward though.

The Equalizer, which is based on the original TV series starring Edward Woodward as P.I. Robert McCall, casts Denzel Washington in the role. In the film, McCall is living a quiet life while working at a Home Depot when one of his acts of kindness towards a prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz) gets him embroiled with the Russian mob. Melissa Leo will play McCall's former supervisor who now provides him with information.
