[Movies] Sony Pictures Animation Gives Updates On The Smurfs 3, Hotel Transylvania 2 And More
Posted by Joseph Lee on 03.12.2014

Coming Soon reports that Sony Pictures Animation has provided updates on four different upcoming films from the studio.

Sony Pictures Digital Productions President Bob Osher said: "I am really excited by the variety of our upcoming projects as well as the amazing talent working on them."

The first film is The Smurfs 3, which will be directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet). It will be a fully computer-animated film and is currently under the title of The Untitled Smurfs Movie. It will be released in August 2015. Jordan Kerner will produce with Mary Ellen Bauder (Hotel Transylvania). The first two movies, a combination of live-action and CG, brought in $910 million worldwide combined.

Genndy Tartakovsky has three projects that he is working on. The first is Hotel Transylvania 2, which will be released on September 2015. Adam Sandler will once again voice Dracula and will co-write with Robert Smigel. Tartakovsky is also working on a new CG version of Popeye and a new original idea called Genndy Tartakovsky's Can You Imagine?. It's described as a "fantastic journey through one boy's imagination". Michelle Murdocca will produce.

Asbury said: "I'm really excited about taking the Smurfs in a completely new fresh direction. We're not making a 'Smurfs 3' film. Our character designs and environments will be stylistically closer to the original artwork created by Peyo. Our story will explore the beginnings of the beloved little blue creatures in a fun full CG animated comedy-adventure for every generation to enjoy."

Tartakovsky added: "It's good to be back at the Hotel Transylvania, and I'm very excited to work on Popeye, a character that I've loved since I was a kid. I'm also looking forward to developing an entirely new and original animated feature here at Sony Pictures Animation. This is an exciting time for me and for the studio."

Sony Pictures Animation President of Production Michelle Raimo Kouyate is working with the filmmakers on the projects while overseeing the studio's development slate. All of the images and animation will be done by Sony Pictures Imageworks.
