[Movies] Joe Cornish to Direct Section 6 For Universal
Posted by Joseph Lee on 03.19.2014

the Wrap reports that Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) will direct Universal's Section 6, which stars Jack O'Connell (Unbroken). Universal is hoping to make it a franchise.

The film is a historical spy thriller. It follows the World War 1-era creation of MI6, the British intelligence agency. It also focuses on the first director, Sir George Mansfield Cummings, who inspired the character of M in the James Bond series. Several big-name actors want to play Cummings. O'Connell will play a young spy.

Aaron Berg wrote the script, which was acquired after a bidding war in October. Universal beat Sony because it included "progress-to-production language". Universal also has faith in O'Connell to anchor the film, as his performance as Louis Zamperini in Unbroken (directed by Angelina Jolie) is expected to get award buzz.

Lawrence Grey (who developed the script with Berg), will produce through Grey Matter Productions with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Marc Platt Productions. Nira Park (Attack the Block) will produce through Big Talk Pictures. Universal's Jeff Kirschenbaum made the deal for the film and the studio's executives Jon Mone and Sara Scott will oversee.

Cornish had been in talks to direct Star Trek 3 but decided to wait for a different project. He liked the idea of launching a potential franchise with Section 6.
