The 1978 rendition...
As fantasyphiles know, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy wasn't the first cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic tale. Ralph Bakshi did an animated version of the film in 1978 that never really resonated the way that was hoped and didn't tell the complete story. It's famous for its use of rotoscoping animation (in which animation is laid over live-action performances) and was the first animated film presented with Dolby Stereo sound.
Now some new footage from the film has been posted online by Bakshi's son Eddie. The footage, which was cut from the final product, was posted to Ralph's Facebook page and can be seen below. The scenes are from Gandalf's recollection of his fight with the Balrog. Eddie noted that any lost material he finds will be reshot if he considers it worthy.
